Duarte City Council Approves Changes to Commissioner Term Dates

Post Date:10/30/2024

At its regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, September 10, the Duarte City Council approved the first reading of Ordinance No. 923 to change the commissioner term dates to begin on March 1 of odd-numbered years and end on February 28 of the fourth year.

The ordinance provides staff with greater flexibility in scheduling interviews with applicants, allows for new Councilmembers to take office and participate in the appointment process, and provides the opportunity for non-elected Council candidates to be considered for a Commission seat.

To align with the updated timeline, the terms for current commissioners originally set to end on December 31, 2024, will be extended to February 28, 2025. Similarly, those scheduled to end on December 31, 2026, will be extended to February 28, 2027.

There are five commissions provided in the Duarte Municipal Code, each of which has vacancies for the next term:

  • Planning and Economic Development Commission: Two vacancies

  • Public Works and Traffic Safety Commission: Two vacancies

  • Parks and Recreation Commission: Three vacancies

  • Public Safety Commission: Two vacancies

  • Public Utilities, Communications and Technology Commission: Three vacancies

In accordance with the updated timeline, the application period for the vacancies listed above will open on Monday, December 9. Most applicants must maintain a current residence in the City unless stated otherwise in the application, have no felony convictions, and provide a written resume in addition to the completed application. Commission descriptions are available on the City’s website at AccessDuarte.com/City-Commissions. The application will also soon be available on the Commissions & Committees webpage.
