At the Adjourned Regular Meeting of the Duarte City Council on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 the Council voted and unanimously appointed Toney Lewis to fill the District 7 City Council vacancy. The position was left vacant after Jocelyn Nunez, elected in November of 2018, resigned in early April.
Lewis, a life-long member of the Duarte community, first moved here during the early 70’s from Mississippi. A proud Duarte High School Falcon, Toney grew up attending all Duarte Schools including Maxwell Elementary and the former Northview Intermediate School. Professionally Lewis is a certified paramedic for Los Angeles County and a longtime construction volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, traveling to several countries laying home flooring. He also the proud father of his 14-year old son Domenick and has three nieces that live in the neighborhood as well.
Lewis admits he is new to politics and is excited to take on his first role as a councilmember. He is proud of his community’s diversity and looks forward to embracing it throughout his service. Some of his initial goals include increasing voter registration numbers citywide and hosting a community pancake breakfast in his District.
