The City of Duarte has partnered again with Service Line Warranties of America (SLWA) to offer protection for homeowners for the Dual Product (Water Primary) protection program. A tiny insect no bigger than a grain of rice called the Asian citrus psyllid; carrier of the Huanglongbing or HLB disease has been detected in the City of Duarte. While not harmful to humans, the disease kills citrus trees and has no cure. The California Department of Food and Agriculture is currently going door to door in the community to inspect citrus trees for the disease.
Starting next week and for approximately two months, the City of Duarte will begin surveying its “Public Right of Way” areas throughout the community. Public right of way is defined as streets, alleys, sidewalks, etc.

The National Weather Service is predicting an upcoming winter storm system consisting of three events starting Thursday, January 31st through Monday, February 4, 2019. The heaviest part of the system will pass through the City on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from approximately 4:00 am to 5:00 pm where rainfall levels could range from .5 to 1 inch per hour resulting in a possible downfall of 2.5’ to 3.5’ inches for the total storm.

DUARTE, CA, December 13, 2018 – Duarte residents can expect to begin paying more per month on their refuse and recycling bill effective January 1, 2019. This 6.4% increase is the first increase to residential refuse service rates since January 1, 2018. Over the last year, the factors that make up the rate have changed; especially the recycling credit due to the China Sword policy that has now been in effect for approximately 12 months.
The Duarte Public Safety Department will not be issuing parking citations for street sweeping or 3-6 am parking restrictions from December 21, 2018, to January 4, 2019, in recognition of the Christmas and New Year holiday’s. The Richman Group plans to begin construction in the coming weeks on its new project, The Huntington, on the north side of Huntington Drive just west of Cotter Avenue. The Huntington is a mixed-use project with 161 luxury apartments, 7,375 square feet of commercial and live work space. The Duarte City Council has approved the City of Hope’s Campus Plan that sets in motion a major expansion and modernization effort on the 110-acre campus, located at 1500 Duarte Road. Members of the Duarte Community, please be aware that the below flyers have been distributed to portions of the City advertising the legal conversion of garages into rentable second units. Unfortunately, the company promoting these conversions did not check with the City of Duarte to see if conversions of this nature were legal under existing City codes. DUARTE, CA, August 27, 2018 -The City of Duarte has been awarded a $498,448 competitive state grant under the California Intervention and Prevention Grant Program (Cal-VIP) to reduce violent crime by 25% and expand trauma-based care to over 600 young adults 18-24 years of age in Duarte, Monrovia as well as adjoining unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

DUARTE, CA - City officials have been informed that the LA County Board of Supervisors at their September 4thmeeting will vote to set aside less than 2% of Measure H’s $355 million annual revenue to LA County’s 88 cities to combat homelessness in their communities. An approximate $6 million dollar annual grant program would be the total set aside from the ¼ cent sales tax that went into effect in November of 2017.

Duarte Transit is embracing the City’s long standing, successful contract service model and applying it to our aging transit system. The Duarte City Council voted at its July 24thCity Council meeting to put a measure prohibiting the sale of and discharge of legal fireworks starting in 2019 before the voters on the upcoming November 2018 ballot. The Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder has given it the designation Measure F; Duarte Ballot Measure Regarding Ordinancee to Ban/Prohibit Fireworks.

In response to years of concerns from residents about street cleanliness and litter on City streets, the City of Duarte began rolling out its Mandatory Citywide Street Sweeping Program in April in all quadrants with the exception of Quadrant 2.The three-month grace period will start June 1st where written warning notices only will be issued. At the conclusion of the 90-day grace and education period from June 1st to August 31, 2018, Duarte Public Safety will start issuing $60 citations September 4th following the Labor Day holiday.

Duarte will again host the Pasadena-Duarte NAACP’s local competition of the Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) for all high school youth, especially those of African American descent, on Saturday, April 28th from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Duarte Senior Center located at 1610 Huntington Drive, Duarte, CA. DUARTE CA, March 22, 2018- The City of Duarte continues its efforts to enhance public safety in the community by partnering with Ring to provide residents with a discounted price on select Ring Home Security Products. Specifically, the City of Duarte will offer a $50 subsidy per household and Ring will provide an additional $50 discount. To be eligible, applicants must be a resident of the City of Duarte and submit proof of residency. Residency must be verified with a combination of the following documents: 1) a valid California Driver’s License or Identification Card (must display the address listed on the application form); and, 2) a current utility bill or bank statement. Once this information is verified, the promotional discount codes will be emailed to the e-mail address listed on their application. The $100 discount will only be available on a first come first serve basis to the first 200 verified Duarte residents to purchase one Ring discounted product per household.
The National Weather Service is now predicting that the heaviest part of the storm has passed the City of Duarte. Based on this new information, both the Melcanyon Road closure will be lifted at 2:00 pm and the wood wall deflectors will be removed at 4:00 pm today, March 22nd. To date, the City has experienced a .74” of total rainfall and no debris flow with this storm. The City of Duarte’s Fish Fire Impact Area will remain at Yellow Alert level through Friday, March 23 at 7:00 am. At this time as well the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will close. Burrtec Waste Industries will be servicing the Fish Fire Impact Area per normal schedule on Friday, March 23, 2018.

DUARTE, CA, January 22, 2018 – Duarte residents can expect to see a modest approximate $0.38 cent increase per month increase in their residential refuse and recycling rates effective January 1, 2018 from $22.07 to $22.45 based on the most common form of service i.e. 90-gallon trash container, 60-gallon recyclable container, and 60-gallon green waste container. Under the City’s contract with Burrtec, annual rate adjustments for refuse collection and recycling are permitted based upon a specific formula including increases to the Consumer Price Index, waste disposal tipping fees and fuel costs.

DUARTE, CA, August, 2017 - Beginning August 28, 2017, the Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass will increase from $10 to $80. The lifetime pass has not increased since 1994 and the new revenue will be used to enhance the visitor experience throughout every National park in the country; currently more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by 6 federal agencies. Senior Passes purchased before August 28, 2017, will be grandfathered in at the old rate and are good for life.
To facilitate the recruitment process and prepare applicants to serve on commissions, the City staff will be conducting a “City Commissioner Informational Workshop” for current commissioners and interested persons on September 26 starting at 5:00 p.m. in the Duarte Community Center. The two-hour event features an overview of commissioner responsibilities and roles, and will be followed by dinner.
On Tuesday, August 1, 2017, Los Angeles County Sheriff ‘s Deputies and fire fighters alongside Duarte Public Safety Personnel and elected officials mingled with residents at Duarte’s annual National Night Out celebration. The City of Duarte continues its long tradition of creating empowering opportunities for at-risk youth through the launching of the Work Investment Network (WIN) summer internship program. WIN, a collaboration of the City of Duarte and Duarte Unified School District created a unique opportunity for 20 at-risk teens and young adults aged 16 – 24, to gain meaningful work experience at a variety of work sites throughout the community.

The City of Duarte has received the “Best Comprehensive Plan for a Small Jurisdiction” award from the Los Angeles Section of the American Planning Association for its Duarte Town Center Specific Plan. The plan was recognized for its innovative and transformational planning techniques, model land use and economic development policy, and utilization of creative incentive-based zoning as its foundation.

California American Water is upgrading the infrastructure that provides water service to customers in the community. They are planning to install a new 8-inch water main through the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Huntington Drive. The new water main is an important part of the water system and will provide reliable and safe water for years to come.

DUARTE, CA, MARCH 23, 2017- Kathryn Barger, newly elected member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors spearheaded the approval of a $10,000 reward to any individual with information leading to the location of suspect(s) in the recent murder of Duarte resident, Kirinda Lavar Morehead. Morehead was shot February 18th in front of his home at around 8:30 pm on Mount Olive Drive after parking his car on the 2300 block of Bashor Street. The incident does not appear to be gang related nor is victim a known gang member. The responsible party is still at-large.
DUARTE, CA, MARCH 22, 2017 - The National Weather Service has notified the City of Duarte that an upcoming Saturday storm is expected to produce 1/4” to 1/2” inch of rain in the community. The City will remain at Green level during this minor event and it is not anticipated to damage the Duarte hillsides left barren by the Fish Fire last year. No EOC operations are anticipated this weekend and both LA County Department of Public Works and Duarte Public Safety will monitor the weather and the impacted mudslide areas throughout the rest of the week.
The City of Duarte has hired a contractor, Care for the Children, to refresh painted curb addresses citywide. This service is being provided at no cost to residents or property owners. Please do not pay the painters or anyone that requests a fee or donation for curb painting.
DUARTE, CA, MARCH 16, 2017- Southern California Edison will be replacing an electrical vault at the northwest corner of Huntington Drive and Windsor Circle,1935 Huntington Drive beginning March 20th causing westbound traffic to be reduced to one lane. The four-week electrical vault replacement process requires the temporary relocation of live wires causing the sidewalk to not be available to pedestrian traffic as well.
SCE CONDUCTS MAINTENANCE POWER OUTAGES ON MARCH 14TH AND 15TH AFFECTING 313 CUSTOMERS
DUARTE, CA, MARCH 13, 2017 – On the dates of March 14th and 15th,, a total of 278 residential customers, 35 business, and 2 traffic signals will be involved in a 9 hour maintenance outage conducted by Southern California Edison. This scheduled maintenance will begin on Tuesday, March 14th at 8:00 pm and end at 4:30 am on Wednesday, March 15th.
Starting the week of March 6th and concluding on the 31st, the City of Duarte will be adding both updated and new parking restriction signs to streets within the designated Street Sweeping Pilot Program area. The new signage was in response to action taken by the Duarte City Council on October 25, 2016 to revamp the original pilot program that required vehicle removal from both sides of the street on street sweeping days to allowing residents to park on one side one day, and the other side the next.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the shooting death of a male Black adult that occurred on Saturday, February 18, 2017, at 8:18 p.m. on the 2300 block of Bashor Street, Duarte. Based on information gathered through the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff's Department has at this point, ruled out the possibility that this crime was either gang or race related.
With the bulk of the clean up operation behind them, City of Duarte officials are moving to the Green Alert level at 4 pm this afternoon, February 18th. Identification checkpoints will lift and the public and residents may now move about freely through the impact area.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Operation Safe Streets gang detectives are continuing their investigation into a shooting that occurred on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at approximately 2:48 p.m. on the 2500 block of Bloomdale Street, Duarte.
The City has been receiving many calls about the upcoming atmospheric river event designated to hit our community this Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18th. Based on current available information, the City is planning to declare a Yellow Alert Level starting tomorrow, February 16th at noon in the Fish Fire Impact Area with the possibility of moving to the Red Alert Level, Friday, February 17th at 7:00 am.
At 5 pm, the National Weather Service (NWS) declared a Flash Flood Warning for the Fish Fire Burn Area until 8 pm as the City continues to brace for what the NWS is calling an “atmospheric river event” that will be impacting the City of Duarte and the Fish Fire Impact Area today and tomorrow, February 17th and 18th generating up to an inch an hour in rain including wind gusts of up to 70 MPH. The City remains at Red Alert Level in the Fish Fire Impact area since 7 am on the 17th placing approximately 202 homes under mandatory evacuation.
A strong winter storm is expected to reach the Los Angeles County Region as early as Thursday evening, with significant rain expected in the post Fish Fire Burn Area through the weekend. To restore Maddock Debris Basin’s ability to protect downstream residents and property, LA County Public Works will perform an emergency 24-hour-a-day operation of hauling sediment and debris from the basin, located in the City of Duarte, to Manning Pit in the City of Irwindale.
DUARTE, CA, February 13, 2017 – Duarte, “The City of Health” encourages our community to keep “health” as their top priority for 2017 by attending a free health fair on Saturday, March 4th from 8:00 - 11:30 a.m. at the Duarte Community Center, 1600 Huntington Drive, Duarte, CA 91010. During the event, a variety for free services will be available including full panel blood testing (Note: an individual must fast eight hours before test); bone density, dental, vision, blood pressure and body mass index screenings; ask a dietician and ask a pharmacist booths and a colorectal cancer screening take home kit.
The City of Duarte has moved back to the Green Alert Level as of February 7th and Duarte Transit has resumed normal operations. In terms of pending weather events, the National Weather Service has alreadly advised city officials regarding an upcoming Friday, February 11th and Saturday the 12th storm. Preliminary weather models are indicating light showers of 1/2" to 1" rain totals with intensity rates of a 1/4" an hour. If these models remain consistent, the City expects to stay at a Green Alert Level through the weekend. Additionally, Los Angeles County Public Works will not be issuing a phase flow alert for the Fish Fire Impact Area at this time.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory this morning and has also advised the City that a storm will affect the community Sunday night through Monday with periods of moderate rain totaling 0.5 to 1.50 inch with potential for rainfall rates to move to up to one half inch per hour. Additionally, there is a chance of moderate to strong winds with gusts 30 to 50 mph. Rain chances continue through Tuesday into Wednesday morning. This storm may be intense enough to create mud and debris flows in recent burn areas. Currently, Los Angeles County Public Works has issued a No Phase
The City of Duarte will commence street improvements to Bradbourne Avenue between Royal Oaks Drive and Huntington Drive starting next Monday, February 6, 2018. These improvements include roadway resurfacing, installation of new curbs and gutter, sidewalk with ADA ramps, permeable concrete gutters, and automatic retractable screens (ARS) for the catch basins.
The City of Duarte will begin to transport sediment that was stockpiled at Greenbank Avenue to the Los Angeles County Manning Pit Facility starting Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The City’s contractor Sully-Miller will begin transporting the sediment from the stockpile starting at 7:00AM, and anticipates work to take three days to complete.
Mandatory Evacuation orders will lift today at 2:00 pm for the approximately 180 homes in the Fish Fire Impact area and the City will move to the Yellow Alert level. Once the orders have been lifted, residents impacted by the evacuation may return to their homes with proper ID. Identification check points will remain in place until 10:00 pm tonight at the following intersections: Royal Oaks and Greenbank, Bettyhill and Conata, Royal Oaks and Mel Canyon, eastbound Fish Canyon at Mel Canyon, westbound Fish Canyon at Mel Canyon, Mountaincrest and Deerlane, and Brookridge and Tannencrest.
LOS ANGELES, January 23, 2016—Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today announced that a “SoCalGas Advisory,” will be issued for tomorrow, January 23, 2017. A SoCalGas Advisory asks customers to immediately reduce their natural gas use to help lower the risk of possible natural gas and electricity shortages. The Advisory will be in effect beginning at 7am tomorrow and remain in effect until further notice.
The National Weather Service has advised the City that the series of storms will continue to move through Duarte through the weekend. Friday, January 20, rainfall rates of a half inch or more an hour are expected. Heaviest rain is predicted between 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This may potentially trigger mud or debris flows in the Fish Fire Impact Area.
The National Weather Service flash flood watch that began at approximately 9 a.m. this morning will continue until 9 p.m. tonight. Due to the storm’s intensity, debris flow has occurred on Melcanyon Road between Brookridge and Fish Canyon requiring a staffed street closure and clean-up by both City and Contractor crews. The street closure will remain in effect until 9 p.m. tonight, after the storm passes. Between 7 and 8 a.m. on Friday, January 13th, Burrtec will conduct refuse and recycling service on Melcanyon Rd. between Brookridge and Fish Canyon, and on Opal Canyon between Brookridge and Melcanyon Rd. Transit will not be in operation in the Fish Fires Impact Area tomorrow to facilitate the clean up operation. The City’s Emergency Operations Center remains at the monitoring level until the clean up is complete.
DUARTE, CA, January 12, 2017 – Celebrate the birthdate of the late Labor Leader Cesar Chavez by volunteering in your community project on March 25, 2017 on the 32-acre campus of Westminster Gardens. The annual Cesar Chavez volunteer Project, coordinated by Duarte’s Promise: The Alliance for Youth and Westminster Gardens, will kickoff at 8:30 a.m. at Westminster Gardens located at 1420 Santo Domingo in the City of Duarte.
As a result of the storm that occurred in the early hours of Monday, January 9th, approximately 50 cubic yards of debris was released and settled on both Mel Canyon Road and Deerlane Drive. The City’s Field Services staff worked this morning through early afternoon to clear the debris. Road closures were lifted by noon and staff will continue to clear small debris by hand until later today. The City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was also deactivated at 12:30 p.m.

DUARTE, CA, January 2, 2017 – Together, the City of Hope and the City of Duarte unveiled their joint Rose Parade entry "The Miracle of Science with Soul" as part of the 128th annual Tournament of Roses parade this morning on the streets of Pasadena. The float, decorated by Phoenix Decorating Company, was the fifth entry down Colorado Boulevard this morning and featured Darrell George, Duarte City Manager and Cancer survivor.
Los Angeles County Public Works has now upgraded their alert to a Phase 1 Debris Flow Forecast. The National Weather Service had advised the City this morning that a fast moving storm system is predicted to move through Duarte that may generate periods of heavy rain starting the afternoon of December 31st through the evening. Rainfall rates may reach levels that could trigger mud or debris flows in the Fish Fire Impact Area
The City of Duarte has moved to Green Alert Level and all road closures have been lifted following a mud and debris flow that occurred overnight on December 23rd through early morning through December 24th. The approximate 650 cubic yards of mud and debris was located primarily at the intersection of Melcanyon and Deerlane.
DUARTE, CA, December 22, 2016 – The homeless population, although often silent and in the shadows, are part of the demographic make-up of Southern California. To accurately count this often-vulnerable group, the City of Duarte opted to participate in the 2017 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count sponsored by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA).
Residents and visitors will not have to obtain temporary overnight parking permits for passenger vehicles parked on City streets December 23rd, 24th, 25th, 30th and 31st and January 1st and 2nd. This permit suspension affords the community the opportunity to entertain guests and visitors without worrying about purchasing permits during the holidays. Overnight parking enforcement will resume on January 3, 2017.
DUARTE, CA, December 19, 2016 – Duarte residents can expect to begin paying $0.91 cents more per month on their refuse and recycling bill effective January 1, 2017. This 4.3% increase is the first increase to residential refuse service rates since January 1, 2014. Over the three-year period, the factors that make up the rate have increased.

(Duarte, CA) - From 3-17 the last two years to league champions and competing in the CIF playoffs, that’s the remarkable turnaround for the Duarte High School football team. Under first-year head coach James Heggins, Duarte hosted Laguna Beach on Friday night (11-11-16) at 7:30 p.m. at Falcon Stadium in the first round of the Division 13 playoffs. Duarte USD streamed the game live at http://www.mldistrict.com/districts/ca/duarte/.and it wias also broadcasted by Laguna Beach on radio station KX93.5. Duarte was 7-3 and champions of the Montview League, while Laguna Beach won its last four games to go 6-4 and finish third in the Orange Coast League. Sadly, Duarte's season came to a close that night when they lost to Laguna, 26-21.
The National Weather Service has advised that a storm system may impact the San Gabriel Valley area including Duarte. Although the timing could change, the heaviest rainfall is expected between 10 pm and 2:00 am this evening Sunday, November 20, 2016 through the early morning hours of Monday, November 21st.
The ill-fated St. Francis Dam located a mere fifty miles north of Los Angeles collapsed just before midnight on March 12, 1928, unleashing miles of liquid horror and drowning more than 450 people before reaching the ocean. Author-historian Paul Rippens will relive this disaster in a power point program at the general meeting of the Duarte Historical Society & Museum, 6:00 p.m. on December 2 at the Museum, 777 Encanto Parkway, Encanto Park, Duarte. On Saturday, November 19th, the San Gabriel Valley Energy Wise Partnership (SGVEWP) will launch its Holiday Light Exchange at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. This event will offer San Gabriel Valley residents that are Southern California Edison customers the opportunity to exchange an old incandescent holiday light string for a new ultra-efficient light string. Based on updates from the National Weather service, the City of Duarte has lifted mandatory evacuation orders, closed its Evacuation Center and is in the process of demobilizing its Emergency Operations Center. Since Wednesday, October 26th, the City has been conferring with experts including the National Weather (NWS) Service. Prior to this time, the NWS was advising that a storm would impact Duarte beginning Friday, October 28th resulting in up to an inch and ½ of rainfall predicted sometime between 6:00 AM and Noon. Ten homes in the Fish Fire Impact area would be under mandatory evacuation orders however, the balance of the Impact Area will remain at the Green Alert level not subject to any type of restriction.

Hundreds of red ribbons will flutter along Huntington Drive in honor of the annual Duarte “Red Ribbon Week” celebration happening during the week of October 22-29. All members of the Duarte community are invited to join the rest of the nation as we march against drugs and tie red ribbons on trees along Huntington Drive starting at 9:00 am at the Duarte Teen Center on October 22, 2016. Volunteers will be provided with free t-shirts, lunch, and crafting activities. This event is an official part of the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley’s 26th annual “Make a Difference Day” activities.
The 11.5-mile Foothill Gold Line light rail line from Pasadena to Azusa, with its six new stations in Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa is an unequivocal success. Fully funded by Los Angeles County’s Measure R (which was approved by county voters in 2008), the line was completed on time and under budget and opened for passenger service in March 2016. With the new extension to Azusa, the Metro Gold Line light rail system is now providing service to more than 50,000 daily boardings each weekday.

The Duarte Historical Society and Museum is in need of volunteers. Docents are needed for duty about once every six weeks on either a Wednesday (1-3 p.m.) or Saturday (1-4 p.m.) and will always serve with an experienced volunteer. It is fun and educational.
DUARTE, CA, September 12, 2016 – – In the spirit of keeping Duarte beautiful, the City of Duarte is inviting all residents to roll up their sleeves and participate on Saturday, October 1st in the bi-annual “Duarte Community Clean-up Day “ and a County sponsored household hazardous & E-waste roundup.
DUARTE, CA, August 31, 2016 - Some 475 homes and 10 businesses in Duarte will be without electrical power between 8:00 am and 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6th due to a planned maintenance outage by Southern California Edison.
The City of Duarte will now be offering residents two convenient options to purchase temporary parking permits. A 24-hour a day, City Hall kiosk location and a “way to park” phone app. The kiosk is located in front of City Hall allowing 24-hour per day, walk-up access for residents. Both the machine and the app will allow the user to purchase up to a 10 day pass.
On September 13, 2016, the City Council will hold a public hearing on the Town Center Specific Plan; a Supplemental EIR for the project; General Plan Amendment 15-2; and Zone Change 15-2. The Council meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the City Council Chambers at 1600 Huntington Drive.

Duarte, CA, August 8, 2016- Young, amateur boxers from clubs throughout Southern California will be participating in the annual Duarte Youth Boxing Show on Saturday, August 20, 2016 with doors opening at 11:30 am. The event will be held at Duarte High School Gym, located at 1565 Central Ave. and tickets are available at the door; $10 for attendees 12 and up, $3 for children 11 years and under; children 3 years and under are free. Fans and supporters of amateur youth boxing may also purchase advance tickets for $8 at the Duarte Teen Center. The first bout begins at 1pm and several Duarte boxers will be featured as they compete for a championship belt.
The City of Duarte Parks and Recreation launched the Duarte Boxing Club in 1997. The program has developed over the years into a highly competitive, youth boxing program with participants competing successful in local and national competitions. Residents are encouraged to attend an upcoming community meeting “Post Fire Disaster Preparedness” on Tuesday, September 6th at 7 pm at Valley View Elementary School Cafeteria, 237 Melcanyon Road. The County of Los Angeles Department Of Public Works recently completed construction of the Emerald Necklace Bike Trail located within the Santa Fe Dam Recreation area adjacent to the City of Hope.

Neighborhood Watch block captains, with the support of Duarte Public Safety and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, are inviting all Duarte residents to this free event. Non-profit, Marvell West will provide free hot dogs, hot links, ribs, chicken, and side green salad at 6:00 p.m. to the first 500 attendees. Fresh popcorn will also be available courtesy of Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation. The movie will show at dusk and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
DUARTE, CA; - To better serve the Duarte community, the Duarte Public Safety Office located in the Mountain Vista Plaza (Target Center) at 1042 Huntington Drive will now be open six days per week effective July 8, 2016. In addition to its normal operating hours of Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, the office will now be open Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

DUARTE, CA, July 5, 2016 – Educating the community about the new firework ordinances and fines by the City of Duarte appeared to have proved successful. As such, five, two deputy cars and two undercover cars consisting of the Duarte Special Assignment Team members, along with eight additional deputy personnel and four Community Service Officers, conducted a "Fireworks Suppression Operation"
(Duarte, Ca) - The Duarte Unified School District (DUSD) Board of Education voted 5-0 at the Regular Meeting held on Thursday, June 30, 2016, to approve a partnership with Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA), which will bring the highly successful public charter school to the San Gabriel Valley starting the 2017-18 school year.
For the past several months, the City has been in the process of developing new zoning for the central part of the city. The Town Center Specific Plan is the result of months of work to put in place a zoning that will help to shape our community for the next 20 years and beyond.
Due to active wildfires affecting air quality in the San Gabriel Valley region, public safety officials and city staff, who have been monitoring the situation closely, have officially moved to postpone the 626 Golden Streets event to a future date.
Combine acreage for the San Gabriel Complex fire remains the same at 5,339 acres. Fish Fire remains at 4,253 acres and containment now is 100%. Reservoir Fire remains at 1,146 acres and containment is at 100%
DUARTE, CA - The Duarte community is celebrating! The long awaited new Smart & Final Extra! opened at 7:00 am sharp on June 29, 2016 to dozens of anxious shoppers. The store provides the Duarte community with a new grocery shopping option at the Buena Vista Market Place shopping center located at the northwest corner of Buena Vista and Huntington Drive in the former Ralphs grocery location.
DUARTE, CA, June 28, 2016 – Both the Fish Canyon Falls Trail and the Duarte Transit Saturday Shuttle to the Falls are closed until further notice due to damage the trail sustained during the recent San Gabriel Complex fire as determined by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
In the coming weeks after the San Gabriel Complex fire is fully contained, a geologist and County Fire experts will be on site at the Fish Canyon Falls Trails area to assess the extent of the damage to the trail and determine what repairs are needed.

Los Angeles County Fire Department held an area wide meeting at North View Intermediate School to discuss the status of fighting the San Gabriel Complex fire with over 200 residents from Duarte, Monrovia and Azusa. Representatives from LA County Fire, Sheriff, State Office of Emergency Services, Monrovia Police Department and Fire Department made brief presentations on efforts being made to both control the fire and deal with evacuations.
You may notice a new addition to City sidewalks and parkways-new bus benches and trash receptacles. The City is replacing the pre-cast concrete benches and receptacles for durable and attractive cast-iron street furniture. Over 40 new bus benches and trash receptacles are being installed by the City's Field Services and Transit Divisions staff at Duarte transit bus stops and at prime Metro and Foothill Transit stops.

DUARTE, CA, March 28, 2016 – In a proactive response to growing resident and business concerns over increased property crimes, the Duarte City Council voted at its March 22nd meeting to increase its law enforcement contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by an additional patrol unit starting April 1st. The addition of this unit increases the City’s daytime patrol by 50%.
Recently, construction started on a new drive-thru Starbucks on the northwest corner of Buena Vista Street and Huntington Drive. In addition, to the 1,850 square foot Starbucks, the will also be a 2,600 square foot retail building that will provide space for one or two retail tenants. The developer, Genoa JRTH LLC, expects construction to be competed this summer.
