Tie a red ribbon around Huntington Drive trees in celebration of Red Ribbon Week on October 27TH starting at 9:00 am at the Duarte Teen Center, 1400 Buena Vista Street and join the Duarte community in taking a stand against drugs. The event, courtesy of a Duarte Public Safety tobacco control and awareness grant and several community sponsors, will feature free t-shirts, lunch, a pumpkin patch, and arts and crafts while supplies last. The 2018 theme is “Life is Your Journey, Travel Drug Free."
The march will kick-off the day’s activities starting with a presentation by City of Hope’s Director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Smoking Cessation Programs’ Dr. Brian Tiep, before youth and parents enjoy free, family friendly activities at the Duarte Teen Center. The event will feature one of Duarte Unified School District’s (DUSD) most popular educational program, “Parent University” and also a Vaping Education workshop presented by the Los Angeles County Office of Education Tobacco Use Prevention group. Duarte Public Safety and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Departments will also team up with DUSD during the weeklong celebration to continue educating youth on the dangers of drugs on the various campuses.
Red Ribbon Week is a national, weeklong campaign promoting a drug-free lifestyle. Since 1985, communities nationwide have participated in Red Ribbon Week anti-drug campaign activities to educate youth and the public-at-large about the dangers of drug abuse and to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs.
