Duarte will again host the Pasadena-Duarte NAACP’s local competition of the Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) for all high school youth, especially those of African American descent, on Saturday, April 28th from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Duarte Senior Center located at 1610 Huntington Drive, Duarte, CA. The competition portion is free and open to the public beginning at 1:00 pm.
Students who are citizens of the United States, enrolled in grades 9-12 and are amateurs in any of the more than 30 categories of competition are invited to participate. Youth who achieve a gold medal in their category will proceed to compete in the National Competition to be held July 13-15 in advance of the 109th NAACP Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Most recently at the 2017 National ACT-SO competition in Baltimore, MD., three local high school students including two Duarte High School graduates were awarded a total of three medals: gold, silver and bronze. Since the Branch started competing in 2010, six national medals have been won for the community.
