Duarte Council Unanimously Votes to Commence
Litigation Against City of Azusa and Vulcan Materials Company
The Duarte City Council unanimously voted to commence litigation against the
City of Azusa and Vulcan Materials Company. The vote was taken during a
closed session of the Duarte City Council on July 22. The litigation will
challenge the environmental review and entitlement approval process utilized
for the Vulcan mine expansion project.

Duarte’s Huntington Drive Street Pavement
Project to Begin on July 19
Duarte’s Huntington Drive is in
line for a major overhaul this summer. Repaving of the full length of the
City’s main east-west corridor will begin on July 19 and is scheduled to be
completed at the end of August.

The Hodads Featured Next at Duarte “Sounds of
Summer” Concert Series, July 28
On July 28th, the beach inspired sounds of The Hodads will be cooling the
warm summer evening from 6:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m. This concert is the third in
the series of four that are held on Wednesday evenings at Duarte Park, 1344

Soundwall Construction Starts
Part two of the Duarte Soundwall project on the north side of the 210
freeway will break ground on July 26th in a public ceremony on the Northview
Middle School Field located at 140l Highland Ave. starting at 9:30 a.m. The
long awaited sound wall has been needed since the freeway was extended to
provide noise relief to adjacent Duarte schools and neighborhoods.

From Mt. Everest to Route 66
Jordan Romero, the 13 year-old mountaineer whose most recent conquest was
Mt. Everest, will serve as Grand Marshal of the 15th annual Duarte’s Salute
to Route 66 Parade on Sept. 18.

City of Hope ranked among top 20 cancer centers nationally by U.S.News &
World Report
City
of Hope is recognized as one of the top 20 cancer centers in the country in
U.S.News & World Report’s 2010-11 Best Hospitals rankings.
City of Hope moved up to the 20th position on this year’s list of top cancer
hospitals, and also ranked 38th on the list for urology.

Burrtec to Now Provide Street Sweeping in
Duarte
The Duarte City Council approved Amendment No. 4 to the Municipal Solid
Waste Agreement with Burrtec Waste Industries on June 8 to add street
sweeping to the list of services that they provide.

Moonlight Basketball Saturday Nights at Duarte
High School Gym
If it’s Saturday night, it’s Moonlight
Basketball in Duarte, a program that has been growing more popular with
local teens and young adults for more than a year. The community is invited
to participate in Moonlight Basketball every Saturday from 8 p.m. to

Work Begins on Encanto Nature Walk Bioswale Project Funded with $507,990
Grant from Rivers and Mountain Conservancy
After a nearly a two year delay, the result of grant funds being frozen by
the state — and now released, work has finally begun on the City of Duarte’s
Encanto Nature Walk Bioswale and Outdoor Nature Classroom project at Encanto
Park.

Christian Recording Artists to Perform At Unity and Peace Concert in Duarte,
Aug. 28
Unity
and Peace will be at the heart of a concert to be held Saturday, Aug. 28 at
the Duarte Performing Arts Center, 1401 Highland Ave., Duarte. The concert,
co-sponsored by the City of Duarte, will feature a host of Christian
recording artists representing a variety of musical genres. Doors will open
at 6:30 p.m.

Energy Efficiency Improvements to City
Facilities Creates an Opportunity to Implement an Environmentally Friendly
Solution for upgrading aged facilities
The City of Duarte will install energy efficiency improvements at
various City facilities with no up-front costs. The savings in energy and
maintenance costs will pay for the improvements and produce an average
annual savings to the City of $34,700.

Edison to Finish Electrical System Upgrade in
Parts of Duarte
Southern California Edison will soon be completing a contract with the
Arizona Pipeline Company on work that started in April of 2010 to upgrade
the electrical system on Royal Oaks Drive and in the Fish Canyon areas of
the City of Duarte.
